THE BOOK OF RUTH I. RUTH COMES TO BETHLEHEM (chapter one) A. THE NARRATIVE During the period of the Judges, a famine came to the land of Israel. To escape the famine, Elimelech and his family (his wife, Naomi, and his two sons, Mahlon and Chilion) left Bethlehem to dwell in the land of Moab. While in Moab, Elimelech died and afterward his two sons married two of the girls of Moab, Orpah and Ruth. After a period of time had passed, Mahlon and Chilion died, leaving three widows in the family of Elimelech.
